In order to advance the medicine that doctors practice, medical research is necessary. Medical research is also known as biomedical research, or experimental medicine. Experimental medicine can be basic, applied or transitional. Each form of medical research is important to the medical field.

Basic medical research is used to answer simple questions in the medical industry. Typically, students at universities and medical school perform this type of research to understand the theories and principles that they are learning. Basic medical research is often applied to other types of research in order to create more significant results. The world and how it works is a main focus of basic research. This type of research is often the beginning of new medical ideas and theories. It is the basis for which new medical minds explain extraordinary situations that occur. Researchers or this type often work to perfect medical research so that it effects the population in a healthy way. The focus is placed upon physical, mental and social health. Transactional medical research is vital to ensuring that basic research is brought into the medical field, so that all the money spent on that basic research is not wasted. Many health professionals including the pharmaceutical companies, government entities, and funding entities rely on transitional medical research to validate their faiths in the basic form of research. The goal is for the medical research to progress and have meaning. For example, evolving from the laboratory to clinical trials and then direct patient care. When basic research has been made into a medication, or therapy that is beneficial in the medical field, it is successful. This area of medical research is the most ambitious in nature of all types of research, and is new to the field of medical research.

The clinical trial is a form of basic research that test medication against a placebo, other medications, or other medical criteria. Medical research is an industry that requires significant monetary support to operate. Funding for medical research comes from various places including private and public arenas. In the United States about ninety five billion dollars is supplied for medical research each year. This number changes each year at both an increasing and decreasing rate depending on many factors.

This is because they depend on the new medications to help cure new and old diseases. There are other sources of funding like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which accounts for about three percent of all funding given to medical research. In other countries medical research funding comes from research entities, and tax payers, since the regulations are different in other countries. On an international bases medical research is shared across borders to help the world as a whole. Diseases like HIV/AIDS, cancer, TB, Malaria, FLU, and more are all threats to human health. Without medical research people would be sick and fatally ill more often. Medical research continues to play a vital role in the health of all people in the world.
